A Proverb of Love

A Proverb of Love

Do not make a promise nor a vow.

For a vow, too much to make,

A promise harder to keep.

Do not pledge thyself to me.
Instead, live free from your oath.
No promises, no vows, no pledge.

Do not say, "I forever will love thee!"

"Thou has my heart forever; we shall remain."

For this is a vow— this I will not receive.

Do not promise thy love.

Do not vow thyself to me.

For this I cannot condone.

For a heart is easily broken,
A vow or promise even more.
Instead, could you make me a covenant?
